  2. Surgical templates allow precise placement of implants in accordance with greater safety and confidence of the practitioner to offer a safer, more secure and predictable treatment than could previously be provided Although ideal placement of an implant fixture often is achieved, it can be aided through use of a surgical template. Templates are particularly useful in larger partially edentulous cases. The ideal template is made of hard acrylic with holes slightly larger than the 3.0 mm drill often used during surgery. Construction of a template requires the dentist and surgeon to think about the case, create a wax-up, and decide on location before constructing the appliance. This process will benefit all, particularly the patient, and provide a foundation for a long-lasting prosthetic result.

  3. There are a number of ways to manufacture a template but the main puprose of the template is still the same. A surgical template acts as a guide that assist the clinician in the drilling of a pilot hole that will later on receive an implant. The template will prevent the drill of the clinician from slipping during drilling to prevent the drill bit from snapping inside the bone.
